The Castle Crumbles

You said you wanted a 'real castle' right? Aren't they all pretty much in 'ruins' these days??? :P

So, this week a friend ordered a castle cake for her daughter for a special birthday. she wanted a very pink castle, nothing to specific otherwise- just lots of pink. Okay- we can handle that. So, over the week I began building the castle. Started on Monday and began making turrets and flowers. These things take time of course. We progressed to baking on Wednesday and then decorating on Thursday. Turned out pretty well..
until delivery. I drove to their house (about 45 mins from mine) on a partial dirt road and lots and lots of stops. When I opened the trunk, I have devastated and demoralized. Her husband was standing there waiting for the cake to be revealed so he could carry it in the house. It was in ruins, all of the pieces had fallen all over the tub-- even some of the flowers, leaves and vines had fallen off of the cake. I wish I had thought to take a picture of the castle in ruins, but I was too busy freaking out. I had her husband carry it into the house and I grabbed my repair kit (which unfortunately didn't consist of much for this trip). After about an hour and plenty of encouragement and postive words said by both husband and wife, finally all the pieces were put back together and of course I bumbed into the table and knocked over the columns/turrets again!! We decided to move it to a more stable location, pieced it all back together again. Luckily the recipients were good humored and so sweet about the whole situation!! Here is a picture of the cake after delivery:

A few things to remember for next time: its really hot out- even in the morning-- COOL off the car BEFORE loading, also, consider the architecture for traveling-- those turrets were way too top heavy! Also, Maybe consider a larger cake board, it doesn't HAVE to come all the way to edge!

Hopefully, Maddie will love it and it will be tasty!

Happy birthday, Maddie!!

Angry Birds

My nephew decided he wanted an Angry Birds Birthday cake. We made the birds and pigs a couple of weeks early, just to save time and so they would be solid enough for the trip. Then strawberry cake and grass and a rock edge just like a scene from Angry Birds.

Here are a few pictures of our Playable Angry Bird cake. Every kid at the party was able to shoot a bird thru the slingshot and the birthday boy got to 'shoot' a couple of times. Here are a couple of pictures from the cake.

Well the oven is still an issue. This time around I just left it open a smidge and let the extra heat float out into the kitchen. I am afraid that this is not a viable option for the summer. I am going to need to start an oven fund soon!

This is a simple sweet 16 cake- strawberry cake, buttercream icing covered in fondant, with simple fondant flowers.

Cupcakes are not my friend.

I say a lot of things are not 'your friend'. Those of you who know me well, will know just what i am referring to.

However, cupcakes really aren't my friend. Or maybe my OVEN isnt my friend.

I burned the first 2 dozen cupcakes. The next group, I watched like a crazy person. Everytime, I walked away from the oven for 5 mins and then went back and checked the oven thermometer that I keep in the very old oven--the temperature was 450degs, even though the oven was set at 225. What the world?? Finally, I just kept the oven door open and stood over it and watch them cook. some of them were still a little darker than I prefer. Most of the 'first batch' had to go in the trash, too bad.

Finally-about 45 cupcakes all finished up... I have attached a couple of pictures. enjoy! Some are vanilla and some are strawberry flavored. buttercream icing with fondant gerbera daisies, pink and orange (never know about the iphone pic)!

COMING SOON...

I will post a pic about my least favorite friend right now----THE OVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stegosaurus

here he is in the trunk of our car!
This stegosaurus cake is made of strawberry cake. I used rice krispie treats for the head, tail, legs, and belly. gumpaste for the bony plates, toes, and spikes on the tail. homemade marshmallow fondant covered all of the surfaces.
Since this was for my nephew who was turning 4 this weekend, the colors were made to his specifications. I dont have an airbrush, so I handpainted all of the colors. he wanted the dino to be yellow and brown specifically. We drove this dino 9 hours for delivery of this cake:D
In Dallas on 635 there was a car stopped at a dead stop on the interstate. Luckily my husband was able to stop before hitting him (there was no where to go to another lane) and Steg seemed to handle the quick stop ok. he made the drive pretty well.
Also big thanks to my hubby for helping me think this cake over for weeks or even months also for building the 'stand' for Steg.
